Say the word "LOVE"...

From ancient times, words have been regarded as a source of creation. Creation myths often depict the Creator as simply naming a thing to bring it into existence. Through the repetition of a name or phrase, humans first harnessed the power of the word: the magician conjured, the medicine woman cast out harmful spirits, priests invoked the gods, and tribes prayed for abundance. The rhythmical repetition of words gave birth to chants and mantras, as well as today's affirmations. It also gave birth to the Blues . . . and rock, rap, and country songs, too. But more about that later on.

Through the use of affirmations you, too, can harness the power of words. An affirmation is a phrase that says something about your present physical or emotional state. There are positive affirmations, such as: I am happy. I am successful. My life is filled with love. There are also negative affirmations: I always make mistakes. I am not attractive. No one loves me.

After many repetitions of a phrase, your subconscious begins to accept it as reality. Although we don't consciously choose to repeat the negative affirmations, we often catch ourselves doing just that. We think we are just stating a fact but, as always, what we are really doing is affirming what we have experienced in the past and expect to experience in the future. But affirmations, like visualization, can be used to move our reality in positive directions, too. By choosing to affirm the reality we desire and repeating that affirmation, we are able to send a strong message to the subconscious.

AFFIRMATIONS ON THE AIRWAVES

Popular songs, chants, mantras, and affirmations have one essential feature in common: they all center on a rhythmical, repeated phrase. In a pop song it's called the "hook." All commercial songs have a hook, usually the title of the song. The hook may be repeated twelve times or more in less than three minutes. Like an affirmation, it is usually formulated in the first person and makes a statement that a situation currently exists. For example, an affirmation would be: "My life is filled with abundant love." A hook would be: "I got you, babe."

Hooks are aptly named because they catch your attention and remain attached long after the song is over. A phrase that has a strong rhythm or simple melody is nearly impossible to forget. Advertisers know this well, as we're all painfully aware. How many times have you found yourself humming some idiotic jingle for a product you don't even care about? Children can parrot product slogans and jingles almost as soon as they can talk. On the plus side, there's a whole generation of kids who grew up listening to Schoolhouse Rock who can sing the Preamble to the Constitution!

It can be maddening to have a jingle or song hook running through your head. Often it seems to have come from out of the blue - a nursery rhyme you haven't thought about since childhood, a hit song from ten years ago. It can be triggered by almost any word, thought, or concern that is associated in your mind with that piece of music, no matter how distant the association may seem. However, the very fact that songs and musical phrases can be so easily recalled makes them ideal for use with affirmations. An affirmation set to a simple melody or rhythm can be triggered in exactly the same way as a song hook or jingle. Only in this case, it's something you actually want to remember. When a related word or event triggers the affirmation, youčll be reinforcing a positive message with little or no effort on your part.

There is just such an affirmation on Side 1 of the Visualization Tape. You'll learn more about it in the next chapter.
